"I was not a pretty child," begins the tale of a young girl living in Paris, France. She yearns to look like her beautiful mother.

What happened? Had gnomes stolen her mother's real child and left her in her place? When the real child returns - beautiful as a princess - will our girl be forced to creep away and die?

One day she, Papa, and her two aunts are sitting on the terrace. As her aunt is braiding the girl's hair, the girl begins to cry.

"Child, am I pulling your hair and hurting you?" she asks.

"No," answers the girl, "but I do wish I were beautiful like you and Mama."

At that, Papa looks up from his newspaper. "Come with me. We'll take a ride, just the two of us," he beckons, and off they go in a horse-drawn carriage to the Botanical Gardens in Paris.
