A page turner

A drunken promise finds Banning Talbot the guardian of one sweet young miss, Prudence MacAfee aka "Angel". Or at least that is what he thought. It wasn't until he went to collect Angel that he discovered she was much older than he'd been led to believe and she was anything but an angel. Prudence MacAfee had not had it easy. Her only living relative was a miserly grandfather who'd insisted she wear her dead brother's hand-me-downs rather than spend the money to dress her like the lady she was. The decision to leave with Banning was not easy, her only coming around when she learned her grandfather had been hoarding the allowance Banning had been sending for her. Having found her dressed like a man in breeches, Banning worried that he would not be able to make a good marriage match for her - which was his goal. What he didn't know was that Angel's grandmother had spent much of her time educating her on the ways of the ton and proper etiquette. She does, however, delight in shocking her new guardian with words and acts. As they spend time together, Banning is torn between his growing feelings for Angel and his role as guardian to her. Meanwhile, Angel is keeping secrets. Secrets that she believes will kill any love Banning may feel for her and therefore she tries to protect her own heart. Should they throw propriety to the wind and endure society's harsh scrutiny of their relationship and can it even survive, once there are no more secrets? The Passion of an Angel is a re-issued book by Kasey Michaels. Written with the same humor and warmth that are Ms. Michaels' trademark, it also surprised me. Every time I thought I knew where the book was going, an unexpected plot twist took it somewhere else. Not wanting to wait to find out how everything played out, I couldn't put the book down. This one definitely deserves a special place on the keeper shelf.
