Supply-chain financing, bankruptcy filings, fraudulent filing of financial statements, stock market speculation, backstop lending by the Fed, will all come to a head. Artificially inflated bull markets become bubbly, and bubbles burst! Since the start of 2020, the Fed has expanded its balance sheet by a cool $3 trillion, to 33% of gross domestic product from 19% as of June 2019. The Fed has also acted to shore up the markets in commercial paper and municipal securities and implemented a large-scale experiment in "Main Street" lending. Also, a corporate-bond buying experiment has had the effect of igniting the stock market to continue its remarkable rise, notwithstanding the uncertainty of the effects of the pandemic. In the coming months, I am predicting we will see the Boogeyman: INFLATION. Once inflation enters the picture, anything can happen...including a stock market crash!
