Thornburgh was educated in California and Oregon, earning a BA, NEH, and MFA. He lives and writes in the East San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County, California. His Painter project focuses on the United States, but also features China and Russia and Mexico. The poetry fills nearly half the book, but is among his best.
