Seventeen-year-old Ayuku has a promising future ahead of her. As the brightest student in her school, she wins a full scholarship to study medicine at the University of Maiduguri. But one evening, Islamic terrorists storm her campus and abduct Ayuku along with other students. She finds herself held captive in the notorious Sambisa Forest by dangerous insurgents.

Ayuku clings to her faith as the terrorists try to force her conversion. She forms an unlikely connection with Shehu, the leader of the terrorist cell, as they debate issues of faith and eternity. Yet escaping the forest alive seems impossible. Ayuku's father, weighed down by grief, slips into severe depression that lands him in the hospital. Mandi's faith will now be tested like never before as the two of them fight to build a future in the face of unending chaos.
