Far above the Valley stands the house of the Giant, gabled, fenced and ominous. He is seldom home, but the house watches in his stead, and oak carries secrets to him: though maple tells no tales. The farmers of the Valley pay little heed. Life is dull, swathed in heat and humid sluggish climate; no one thinks much, and whenever an interesting or wise thought occurrs, suddenly it vanishes from the mind. But one of them guessed why, and went away from the Valley, into the Mountains that tower above it: Mountains that have no tops. The Men of the Mountains told him that what was wrong with the Valley....was that the Giant steals its' Wisdom, and locks up all the wisdom of all the people in huge insubstantial tomes that hold shut the Pages of Wisdom. He returns, and whenever he opens his mouth the most peculiar things come out of it; words that shake the heart, until the men of the Valley gather to burn him from the earth, and with him the girl who desires to gain Wisdom. And then, the Giant comes home....
