This booklet outlines a classroom tested framework for co-teaching in inclusion classrooms through the application of the 4 basic principles of the PACT Co-Teaching Inclusion Model. PACT is an acronym that stands for Parity (P) between co-teachers in teaching and class contributions , Alternative/Authentic Assessment (A) as a way to evaluate student learning and understanding, Cooperative Learning (C) as an interactive means to promote student achievement, social growth, and cooperation, and Teamwork (T) between and among students to accomplish learning goals. The booklet explains the value and rationale for each PACT element in a streamlined, nuts and bolts manner, asking readers to consider basic questions about co-teaching and inclusion as they move through the easy to read chapters. What makes PACT different from other co-teaching models is its specific co-teaching design that is applicable to all co-teaching situations. The author argues that the PACT Co-Teaching Inclusion Model provides a defined set of interlocking co-teaching principles that, when implemented correctly, lead to greater equity between co-teachers, increased learning and cooperation among all students, and a richer cooperative culture in the classroom.More a workbook or co-teaching guide than text, The PACT Co-Teaching Inclusion Model booklet has been used by the author as a resource for a graduate level course he co-teaches for Stony Brook University entitled Co-Teaching for Inclusion and in staff development workshops he co-facilitates for practicing co-teachers.
