We are living in a day of introspection and reexamination. A new generation is examining old foundations with an attitude of skepticism, and the words "change" and "relevant" are common in their conversations. In a number of respects this age is similar to the thousand years ago. Samuel Angus described that era as "one of change and upheaval". Jeter (1971) reports that, "Men were driven from their old tie-ups and had not yet become accustomed to the new order. The average man was perplexed by the rapid march of history" (3). In the social confusion and the fall of long-established system, there was much to unsettle the firmest faith. Such transition periods are always fraught with difficulties and danger. Within many quarters of the Christian church this process of change has been radical. Not only have the Church's traditional beliefs and teachings been challenged, but so has its authority as an institution. These are changes that Biblical versed people should fully expect. They are among the signs of our Lord's return. It is timely that we in the Pentecostal Movement should study the biblical foundations of our existence. Our modern Pentecostal Movement was founded through the leadership of the Holy Spirit Himself. Our mission in this critical hour of the world's history is not to be just another denomination. It is a witness to the reality and power of the gospel. "Within a century of this present day outpouring of the Spirit, we have witnessed a growth and a penetration of the Movement unto the ends of the earth" (Jeter 1971, 24). We are witnessing a new openness to the Holy Spirit among many, if not all, of the major church bodies; and it remains to be seen what God will do through them as they yield to the Spirit's leadership.
