The first part, "Outline of the Classics," examines the content, compilation background, academic value, and significance of Chinese classics in intellectual history.
The second part, "Six Lectures on Chinese Cultural History," covers six topics: marriage and the clan system, household registration and social classes, the property system, agriculture, industry and commerce, clothing, food and shelter, and transportation and communication, succinctly outlining ancient Chinese social history.
The third part, "Outline of Neo-Confucianism," traces Neo-Confucian thought from Zhou Dunyi to Zhu Xi, from the mid-Northern Song to the Southern Song period. It first provides an overview of ancient yin-yang, five elements, and divination theories as Neo-Confucianism's intellectual origins. Then it systematically outlines the master-disciple lineages from the Three Masters of the early Song Dynasty through Yuan and Ming Confucians, the core tenets of the Southern Song School of Mind, Song Confucians' studies of numerology and divination, the teachings of Wang Yangming, the Donglin School, etc.
