Book Overview

The 1941 anthology that first carried the pulps into hardcovers - Lovecraft, Kuttner, Sturgeon, Derleth and Wellman, between one pair of boards.

Phil Stong, a mainstream American novelist best known for State Fair, went looking in Weird Tales, Astounding, Unknown and Amazing for the stories the literary world had been high-hatting, and gathered 25 of them - 23 reprints and two originals - into three sections: Strange Ideas, Fresh Variants and Horrors. It was the first anthology to bring a serious body of magazine science fiction and weird fiction into a hardback, and the field has been catching up with it ever since.

Here are H. P. Lovecraft's 'In the Vault', Henry Kuttner's 'The Graveyard Rats', Manly Wade Wellman's 'School for the Unspeakable', Theodore Sturgeon's 'A God in a Garden', August Derleth's 'The Panelled Room', Seabury Quinn, Stanley G. Weinbaum, Murray Leinster, Harry Bates and Lester del Rey - with an editorial from Stong attacking interplanetary fiction, which he refused to include.
