She's just as surprised as Charlotte to learn she has a sister. But when tragedy hits and Charlotte is forced to assume Acelynn's identity in a desperate moment, she uncovers something altogether darker...
No one in her sister's life is quite who they seem to be. And every discovery leads Charlotte deeper into a web of deadly secrets. Charlotte may have wanted Acelynn's life, yet now that she's living it, she wants out. But if she reveals the truth about herself, it will mean returning to her old life--and she's already a dead woman there.
More gripping thrillers from Jessica R. Patch: Her Darkest Secret A Cry in the Dark The Garden Girls
Well, that was quite twisty and kept my mind turning in all directions trying to figure out all the secrets and which sister did what! Charlotte had a tough life, she made some mistakes, did some things thar landed her in trouble, but she loves her found family and now she finds a twin sister after her mother dies. It was interesting to compare the two, especially when Charlotte flees to Georgia to escape a mob boss and ends up in a crazy mess of trying to find peace by becoming Acelynn. Sadly there is no peace there! Just some bodies, a serial killer on the loose, and an overly nosy detective with an interest in the secrets he thinks Acelynn (aka Charlotte) may know. So many twists and so hard to decide which characters I could trust, including Charlotte who may not be the most reliable person. That plus the journal entries (which made everything even twistier!) gave this book a great push and made it really hard to stop reading. I guessed a few twists, though at least one still made me gasp in surprise and changed how I thought the ending would go. Great and thrilling dark read or audiobook!
The narrator did a great job in bringing Charlotte to life and making the journal entries quite horrifying. She really made me feel immersed in the book! And many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me the chance to listen to this audiobook.
chilling psychological thriller

"Want is an open grave that needs to be constantly filled."
Jessica R Patch is the queen of suspense and psychological thrillers. This book had a little less gore than her previous but had equally matched intensity and stomach-dropping twists and turns in the plot. We got a quick glimpse of Special Agent Asa Kodiak from the Strange Crimes Unit series but this book had a serial killer on the outskirts of the plot and not as the central point of the plot.
The unnamed first person voice from "Then" was chilling and quite ominous juxtaposed with Charlotte's present first person voice. Charlotte was easy to love - a survivor who's lived through a lot of darkness and tragedy but still clinging to a shard of hope for a better future. When that hope turns into a desperate obsession to grasp at a better life, her plans unravel and she lands in the midst of high society where everyone is hiding their own secret darkness. All the characters, including Charlotte, drove home the propensity of man to sin while trying to justify the reasons for perpetuating such terrible acts. Faith and pursuit of truth held Detective Christian Patrick steadfast and set him apart from the other characters. Though he didn't have a voice in the story, I felt that we got to know him pretty well from his interactions with Charlotte. Faith wasn't overt in the story but did make an impact in Charlotte's life. There was very little romance between Charlotte and Christian but I wonder if we will see more of them in other books to come. And just when I thought the crazy rollercoaster ride of surprises had come to an end, the epilogue completely knocked me sideways. If you enjoy psychological thrillers, this is a must-read. You'll stay up way past your bedtime.
