THE OTHER SIDE OF THE TREE

In 1952, ANTHONY CRAWFORD WRIGHT is born. He is the interracial love child of TONY CRAWFORD, a white man, and EDNA WRIGHT, a black woman. Not knowing he is the product of an interracial relationship. Anthony grows up in Newark, New Jersey during the turbulent 1960s, a period of great social unrest and racial tension. During this time, Anthony develops an aversion to white people. Anthony thinks he biological father is dead, killed in the war until he learns his father is a white man and his mother lied to him everyday of his life. "He just sat there, that old white man on the bench. He never said anything, just sat there watching the boys play basketball, cheering occasionally at a fine play, but always remaining a curious presence because white people just didn't hang out in West Side Park. "Maybe he's some kind'a pervert", the boys surmised. There was never any set pattern for when the man would show up, but he would be there at least three or four times a week, usually in the mid-afternoon hours when the boys would likely be on the basketball court. He became such a regular fixture the boys stopped noticing him as much. But on the days when the man wasn't perched on the bench, he was conspicuously absent."
