Lack of research

Perhaps the plot is good and the entertainment is fair, but I was put off already on an early page when she writes: 'The evergreens have lost their needles now, the birch trees their leaves.' Does she not understand why they are called evergreens? They only lose their needles when they are dead! I cannot now finish this book, although the rest may be OK.
