Since seeing Judy Garland portraying Marilyn Miller in the 1946 Jerome Kern movie biography "Till the Clouds Roll By," I was curious to know more about Marilyn and her life. I knew she had died young, and I wanted to know more. The book appears to be well written, and the information does appear to be accurate. The author does a complete job in discussing all of her stage appearances and three Hollywood films. Ironically, the one thing he doesn't mention is Miss Garland's portrayal of her! He doesn't even mention the film, nor is it in the index in any capacity, which certainly surprised me. Afterall, that is how I discovered her to begin with. The author does, however, discuss the film bio made of Marilyn's life entitled "Look For the Silver Lining." The book is an interesting read, and I feel I learned a great deal about her and the Broadway theater of that era. Much insight into Ziegfeld and Jack Pickford (her second of three husbands) was also provided. Except for the omission of "Till the Clouds Roll By," the only thing I might consider negative is the lack of dating certain events. I would have liked a few more years mentioned to clarify certain time line events, but overall the author seemed to do an excellent job. I enjoyed the biography, and I recommend it to fans who want to rediscover an interesting woman and performer.
