The "Other" Box is a thought provoking book on the subject of diversity, written for readers of all ages. The author truely allows the reader to see, hear and feel how an eight year old boys' innocence is continuously challenged by society's need for "norms". The main character Mario's spirit throughout the story is fun, uplifting and hopeful. The book gives the reader hope for a more accepting, peaceful society one day. Anyone who has ever felt different should read this book!!!

This is a wonderfully written book told through the eyes of an eight year old biracial boy struggling with the issues of diversity. This story is told in a way that is genuine, sincere, and kind-hearted, through the eyes of innocence. I know there are many children that have and do struggle with the same issues...I highly recommend, The "other" box, to ALL school aged children and parents as well!!!! I LOVED IT!!! Good for Mario!(main character) Hopefully some day soon children won't have to check any box!!

This is truly a wonderful book on a very important subject--diversity! I wonder how many of us had to think for a few minutes before marking the "appropriate" box then gave in and marked "other" just to move on with the other questions on the many forms we have had to deal with over the years. Like the author, we may now feel a sense of obligation and pride to include the races of both parents and not exclude either one. Perhaps one day we will discontinue the whole system of labeling individuals according to a particular race and work toward total acceptance of all groups--Americans all!
