I have to be honest, this book can be very hard to read. The abuse sufferd by this child is heart wrenching and about every 10 pages I thought "I can't read this anymore." But then, halfway through, I saw the light coming through, and with every turn of the page I could sense that she was on the edge of breakthrough. Stick with it, keep reading. This book's message of perservance, healing, and ultimate dependence upon Jesus will be worth the emotional ride. Even before we know, intellectually, in our minds who Jesus is, He makes His presence very tangible and His love able to penetrate any darkness. This book contains some lanuage and very descriptive abuse scenes so I would not recommend it to children under 16 years of age. I recommend this book for adults only and especially to teachers, counselors, or any person who deals with children on a daily basis, as well as those on the road to recovery from an abusive childhood.
His banner over us is Love

Everyone has his or her story. The orphan Lily with Jesus Christ as her protector survived in an emotional foxhole until it was time for her reemergence. She teaches the reader that reemergence is not only possible but beautiful. As Lily's inner child narrates the lasting memories of her formative years it is hard to imagine the horror in such a young life. I wept to read such painful things in the words of a child. As much as Lily's story canvasses a childhood of abuse the lasting message is that one can do all things through Christ(Philippians 4:13). As Lily's true self narrates her reemergence from trauma it is difficult not to feel a strong sense of encouragement at one's potential. I finished this book with a strong feeling of empowerment to be 'me' and to better know my Lord. It is a true testament to the power of Christ's Love to know that even in the worst of conditions a person can trust so completely and can be healed so wholly. His banner over us is Love.

Very fast read. The title of this book suggests the relationship between a developing child and her Lord. But much more than that, it is about how profoundly and durably impacted a child and the woman she develops into can be by the abuses set forth by neurotic/psychotic parenting. Only the power of the Lord's help and her ultimate acceptance of it allows her to overcome the deep wounds inflicted upon her beginning at the earliest elements of episodic memory. It is less a 'punctuated' triumph story than one that could inspire many to begin a healing process and become whole, even comparatively late in life.
