Book Overview

In his last book, the late William Carr provides a masterly account of the origins and impact of the three major wars fought by Prussia in creating the Bismarckian Reich of 1871. He begins with a study of the development of nationalism and liberalism from the late eighteenth century to the 1860's, before turning to a detailed examination of the Schleswig-Holstein Conflict of 1864; the Six Weeks War' of 1866; and the Franco-Prussia War of 1870--71.

Outstanding book, with its length belying its depth

This book is a simply outstanding, meaty introduction to a complicated era of European history, brought out with an amazing balance of interesting social, anecdotal, statistical, and diplomatic detail. This could be the only source you read on the subject, and you'll be well served. Or it could start you along a long road of exploring its topics--such as the once perennial Schleswig-Holstein question, Austro-Prussian relations and the dream of a greater Germany, etc., etc.--more in-depth.
