Wintu is a Yearling in Bartogle's Wolf Pack which dwells in the far north where the tundra never thaws. The Pack has been untouched by the outside world. Until a Retriever named Blackie shows up at their Gathering Place. Blackie hails from a faraway Village mostly deserted by the Humans. The strays left behind are on their own. Some go it alone, but most run in packs. Blackie is a member of The Professor's pack who have gathered together in a former theater. Abandoned by their Masters, the Professor's Dogs are feeling down on their luck and lacking in self-confidence. The Professor gets the idea that the Wolves may help, and that's how Blackie winds up at the Wolves's Gathering Place. His sudden appearance causes a crisis among the Pack Elders. Bartogle wants to let Blackie go. But Ceptar, the Outsider who wants to be Leader, plans to kill him to discredit Bartogle. It's up to Wintu and his friend Akiia to save him. A Rottweiler named Wrecker, also from the Village, has an entirely different agenda. When he implements his plan, Wintu must confront the evil occurring on Bellows Isle, and outsmart the evil Ceptar who wants to eliminate him. Geared toward young readers, this is an adventure story. It centers around the relationship of the wild Wolves, to which all Dogs share an ancient ancestry, and the domesticated Dog selectively bred to be "Man's Best Friend". Beautifully illustrated with pen and ink drawings of many of the characters.
