Our heroine, Sarah, is a divorce attorney who represents Jill Archer. Jill is divorcing John, the mastermind of a plot to grow organs using stem cells, and sell these organs on the black market. Jill, a religious woman, does not believe in taking a life, which, for Jill, includes that of an embryo, even if it means saving a life. Jill's premature demise seemingly clears the way for Archer, however, Jill's reticence is manifest in the older of their two sons, Jason. Jason, however, is conflicted; he wants his younger brother Brandon to finally receive a functioning heart, but his mother's beliefs haunt him. Jill's death also brings detective Jake Reed into Sarah's life. Together they wind through a labyrinth of clues and finally uncover Archer's plot.
