The Oresteia By Aeschylus: An Acting Version

By Robert A. Johnston

Book Overview

The Oresteia by Aeschylus is a classic Greek tragedy that tells the story of the cursed House of Atreus. The play is divided into three parts: Agamemnon, The Libation Bearers, and The Eumenides. In Agamemnon, the titular character returns home from the Trojan War to be murdered by his wife Clytemnestra and her lover Aegisthus. In The Libation Bearers, Orestes, Agamemnon's son, seeks revenge for his father's death and kills both Clytemnestra and Aegisthus. In The Eumenides, Orestes is pursued by the Furies, ancient goddesses of vengeance, and must stand trial for his crimes. This particular version of The Oresteia is an ""acting version"" by Robert A. Johnston, meaning it is intended for performance rather than simply reading. Johnston has adapted the play to make it more accessible to modern audiences while still retaining the original language and themes. The book includes detailed stage directions and notes for actors and directors, as well as an introduction that provides historical and cultural context for the play. Overall, The Oresteia is a timeless masterpiece of Greek drama that continues to captivate audiences today. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
