The Operating System : Translation / Harmonious Tension:: Print > Volume 3

THE OPERATING SYSTEM presents a compound volume of new and experimental literature and poetics, assembled around the themes of TRANSLATION and HARMONIOUS TENSION. This edition includes four variations on a theme: print volumes 3.1-3.4, understood as editorial "translations," with nearly identical tables of content, as the pieces are drawn primarily from procedural works. ?The twenty-two featured contributors span four generations and include an indie filmmaker, an amateur astronomer, a contemporary composer, and a hungarian absurdist, among others. This body of work has been written produced using not only original procedural design but also over a dozen languages (including mathematics, sound, and multiple digital graphic renderings of audio, in addition to the standard human usage variety).?The five original covers (1 outer and 4 inner, for each variation) were chosen from ten iterations produced by Eric Meyer and Aaron Liechty via a familiar trope of contemporary digital design practice, the "layer volley," which was documented live with commentary on our web platform this spring.
