This book is a commentary on the Mother Tongue and English Teaching Project (MOTET), which was a collaborative enterprise between the University of Bradford, Bradford College and Bradford Local Education Authority. MOTET was concerned with investigating some of the effects of the first year of a bilingual programme for young South Asian children entering two schools in the Bradford Metropolitan District. This discussion of the findings is intended for a wide audience and for that reason the results are presented in the context of key ideas in the current literature. After a brief introduction to the terminology of the field, the commentary explores the project in terms of four themes: - the community context; - the educational/school context; - the teaching/learning process; - the language education of young bilingual children.
