What to do when your planet is about to be scorched to a cinder by a coronal mass ejection? You plant a colony on Mars Of course that planet had to be changed, terraformed into some place with breathable air, water and plants. Fortunately there was technology and equipment for that sent and activated years ago resulting in something akin to a steppe like environment. But you can't change the terrain and not everyone could live in those conditions but some could and they already lived in the steppes of Central Asia. Fertilized ova from these clans would be sent along with scientists, administrators and military from the Baikonur Cosmodrome. The plan was to genetically modify the colonists but there was opposition to that even before liftoff and few took advantage of the process. Many other countries were building ships to send their people to safety as well but there were too few ships available and it was inevitable that most on Earth perished. Two ships landed on Mars filled to capacity with the last humans in the Solar System just before that happened. From the very beginning the Mars colony had too many different factions and there were disagreements, deep, deep disagreements. People died and not because of planetary conditions. Survival of the colony was stake and the rightful leaders are dead when a call for help came. A small research facility located in what was Antarctica asked for rescue. Another plasma ejection was forming and a marker was being called for payment. It's up to the genetically modified heirs of the Captain and the Pilot to complete the mission their parents risked so much for and to save the remnants of humanity.
