The Old Norse Element In Swedish Romanticism (1914)

By Adolph Burnett Benson

Book Overview

The Old Norse Element in Swedish Romanticism is a book written by Adolph Burnett Benson and published in 1914. The book explores the influence of Old Norse mythology and literature on Swedish Romanticism, a literary and cultural movement that emerged in Sweden during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Benson's work delves into the ways in which Swedish Romantic writers, such as Erik Gustaf Geijer, Esaias Tegnr, and Per Daniel Amadeus Atterbom, drew inspiration from the rich tradition of Norse mythology and sagas. He examines the ways in which these writers incorporated elements of Norse mythology into their works, including themes of heroism, love, and the supernatural. The book also explores the broader cultural and historical context in which Swedish Romanticism developed, including the political and social upheavals of the time. Benson argues that the revival of interest in Old Norse literature and culture was a response to these changes, as writers sought to reconnect with Sweden's ancient past and forge a new national identity. Overall, The Old Norse Element in Swedish Romanticism is a fascinating exploration of the intersection of literature, history, and mythology, and sheds light on a little-known aspect of Swedish cultural history. This Book Is In English. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
