Going a level deeper

The Passover seder is an invitation to probe ideas that touch upon the most fundamental questions of Jewishness and existence. Rabbi Milevsky's commentary entices and guides readers through this process with insightful questions and thoughtful, substantive discussions that revealed the hidden depths and wisdom of the Haggadah beneath its superficially simple veneer.He asks, for example, how we can reconcile the competing traditions that simultaneousy claim the Jews of Egypt were staunchly committed to their Jewish identity by retaining Jewish names, dress, and language yet were rushed out of Egypt at the last moment to prevent them sinking to an irredeemable level of impurity. In the course of his answer, he touches upon Jewish identity in the modern Western world, diaspora psychology, and the personal implications of Exodus for us today. Elsewhere, he explains the not immediately apparent wisdom behind the wise son's question ("What are the principles, the laws, and the statutes that Hashem our God has commanded you?") and its cryptic answer ("It is forbidden to eat anything after the afikoman").I particularly like this Haggadah because it consists of extended analyses and essays rather than the brief footnotes or abbreviated answers common to so many other annotated Haggadah's. The fuller commentary engenders a level of depth and substance to this work that is difficult to find in many other commentaries. Rabbi Milevsky's work is consequently an immensely satisfying and enriching text. If you're looking to go a level deeper this year I strongly recommend this Haggadah.
