This is an old-fashioned novel about real people doing real things. However, the people in the story and the things they do are hardly ordinary. Consider Jason Baudelaire who dreamed of becoming an ornithologist, roaming tropical jungles to find new species of birds. By the time he came of age in the late 1950s and early 60s, that era was over. Instead of following his peers into lab science, Jason jumped ahead of his time and pioneered field studies on the ecological webs linking viruses and their hosts, initially wild birds, but for most of his career, wild bats! Long before some Asian bat gave us COVID-19, Jason was crawling through Trinidad caves and prowling African rivers to document new bat viruses. Jason and the women he came to love were also ahead of their time in bucking the ubiquitous male chauvinism of the era. None of them could see any reason why they couldn't all be respected scientists, even happily married ones. Realizing this dream turns out to be a tough road for all concerned. Like the Homeric Odysseus, Jason's odyssey eventually leads him to Ithaca. Here his challenges reach epic proportions, leading to a final outcome that he, and perhaps most readers, never expected.
