Review of the Idiot

I actually know the author personally and thought I would just read the book as a courteously to a friend. Man, was I surprised when I found myself halfway through the book in a blink of an eye on a flight I wished were just a bit longer so I could have finished before attending to my business. Quite a travelogue through his trials and tribulations, as well as this country and the world. Some very touching passages; and, how can they not be as you get to know his kids through the book. I think I saw where someone recommended it for summer reading. That would be fine if summer only lasted a day or two because this is one quick wonderful read. A little spiritual at times, which wasn't necessarily my cup of tea, but certainly does not get in the way of anything. This is a book I highly recommend. I await the next one when maybe he can enlighten us all to how he resolved the dilemma that put him on his journey with his kids to see his father.

A Great Book Club Read!!

Does this book enter into uncharted literary waters?...Probably not. Does this book provide several hours of insightful, thought-provoking, and often humorous entertainment?...Absolutely! It's a great book for summer vacation reading. Readers can sit and read a chapter, watch the waves, reflect on a parallel experience in their own lives, sip a beverage, read the next chapter, watch, reflect, etc., and suddenly find that they've had a valuable introspective experience. The author has a skill with the use of analogies, metaphors, similes, and comparisons that frequently brings a smile to your face, a chuckle in the back of your throat and occasionally full explosive laughter. The author writes in a fast-paced train of thought manner which holds the reader's attention throughout this "Odyssey." The "Odyssey" is multifaceted. The literal journey follows the author's first-ever extended, traveling vacation alone with his children and chronicles their reactions to the nation's history, grandeur and its people. The autobiographical journey looks at the author's own life experiences as a child, young adult and father as his children and he travel to visit his own father who passed away during the writing of this book. Finally, he intersperses intriguing experiences from his own 30 years of professional globe-trotting. It all pulls together into a fascinating narrative. Well worth the read!
