World war ll on the Island of Jersey in the English Channel

What a gripping, heart racing story set on the small Island of Jersey, in the English Channel, that was invaded and taken over by Germany and filled with Nazi soldiers. The story is full of love, scarifice, and danger, that at certains parts of the story I was actually clenching my jaw, with fear of what may happen to the main characters in the story !! It is about a young married couple who live on the island, and own and run their own bakery. He is of German Decent and she is English. Everything is fine, on their beautiful little island, with its picture postcard beaches, farms of flowers, and cows, beautiful mountains and forest. Until the war breaks out, and the husband Fred is conscripted to fight for his motherland Germany .His wife Celine, is shocked to find out he's to leave within 2 days..hardly enough time to get use to the idea of his leaving and her being by herself..and hardly enough time to be together, alone, before he is shipped out. Celine on the other hands learns of the Germans landing at any moment, and worries for her closest and only Friend Rachel Cohen who is Jewish...and now stuck on the island with no way to leave. Through the story Fred has to deal with the harsh realities of what his German soldiers are doing in Paris...and he struggles..with who he wants to even identify with.He hates the atrocities the germans are doing to the Jewish and Paris Resistance peoples, and winds up working as a double agent for and against Germany. Back home Celine has decided to hide Rachel from the German troops, and that in its self leads to Horrific situations. so much more to the story..with an ending that took me by surprise...I truly enjoyed this book from beginning to end, would definitely look into other books by this author. Definitely read it if you get the chance.!
