AN INSTANT #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - What if being famous was the most dangerous thing you ever did? #1 New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Natasha Preston is back with a twisted tale of social media, secrets, and survival. SOMEONE IS ALWAYS WATCHING. Connie never asked to be famous--but thanks to her mother's relentless vlogging, she and her sister Isla have spent their lives under a virtual microscope. Every smile, every moment curated for clicks. Every stranger online thinking they know them. Then local girls--girls who look just like Connie--start dying. One by one. As the bodies pile up and the spotlight turns sinister, Connie is forced to confront the terrifying truth: someone isn't just watching. They're planning.
I was all for this thriller until that completely awful ending. This has a very true to life feel with all the people vlogging and posting everything on social media in order to get the likes, sponsors, and money nowadays. I am very glad not to be part of that crowd though I can see why it draws people in.
And that is the basis for this book, with Connie, Isla, and their mom all big stars due to the constant vlogging that got them a new house and internet fame. Of course with that fame, there are always the trolls that come out of the woodworks, or worse. In this case, much worse. I really felt for Connie and I cannot believe the family disfunction with her mom leaving her on her own and not deigning to come back when the "accidents" and other creepy things start happening. It does ramp up the tension and I admit, I was hooked but only because I was rooting for Connie and I wanted to find out what the heck the end game was. Unfortunately the climax and ending seemed completely rushed and I felt shocked and confused and I did not like that ending which is like the fall of an ax, so sudden.
So, I was all for this until the end which cost the book a star. I have read a few books by Natasha Preston and I think this was my least favorite. Rewrite that ending and add a few more pages and it could redeem itself.
