When DJ gets in trouble with the Mexicali District Attorney and escapes to Ixtl n with his wife and five children, the family unity of seven sons left behind begins to fall apart. Following his departure, their business in Mexicali is foundering. Then there's a tragic confrontation in Mexicali between the bully of the barrio and a younger son. With his son's life in peril, DJ is forced to return, reunite the family, and save his son. However, he will first have to face the DA and save himself from jail. Meanwhile, 9-year-old Rufiano is struggling to adapt to the small-town life in Ixtl n. First, he confronts rejection by his classmates (and teachers), until a neighbor kid becomes his friend and his mentor. In the end, he succeeds in becoming a local kid when his classmates throw him into a fight with his nemesis to settle their differences. The story takes place in 1957-59.
