The Nightmares of Sasha Weitzwoman was written over a period of 18 years. The real framein the surreal/magical real escapade is that an American woman journalist goes over toJerusalem to cover the first Intifada. She stays in a haunted hotel in West Jerusalem, replete with Zionist ghosts in the rafters. Other apparitions, such as an enchanted Arab History Book, which a Palestinian worker has left on a table by the side of her bed, come alive at night. A science fiction frame also develops, in that whatever visions posses the main character, she records as prophetic snatches of what is to come. A post-deluvian institute in the future meanwhile debates the merits of publishing the various fragments of her manuscript which have been brought to the attention of scholars. The book shows the level of psychic suffering of many differently-situated individuals on all sides, stemming from the protracted and convoluted struggle, demonstrating through a literary prose style that sexual repression is the root of war and societal violence. The text presents a controversial woman-centered version ofboth the Jewish religion and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, in surreal/fantasy form, through the vehicle of the absurd.
