The Nightmarchers

Noli is used to people calling her hometown Lanakila, on the Hawaiian island of Kaua'i, paradise. But as the child of Hawaiian sovereignty activists seeing the toll of the economic downturn firsthand, Noli can't help but feel a bit jaded. Home from college the summer, she's becoming more and more torn between her life on the mainland and her life in Hawai'i, living with her traditional family and seeing the identity of her town and her people transform, while trying to keep her relationship with her roommate under wraps. Noli's life is turned upside down when John Ekeka, her old high school flame and now a highly-ranked professional surfer, arrives back in town. He's taking the summer off, and seems determined to win Noli back, even though his mainland fame is attracting reality TV producers, determined to turn Lanakila into a star in and of itself. Noli promised herself she wouldn't go back to John after their high school romance went awry, but she feels herself pulled back into his grasp, as he grapples with a famous last name and all of Lanakila grapples with its identity. Two years later, as a medical student in Honolulu, Noli is struggling to recover from the turmoil of that summer, as John sits in jail awaiting trial for a horrible crime. With her hometown carrying such a dark connotation and a family that won't speak to her, Noli will have to figure out for herself what exactly to make of her supposed paradise.
