Another gem from Ed Gorman

I found this book to meet about every criteria I'd rate as important in a crime thriller - or any novel, for that matter. Characters that are so real that you believe and care about them, descriptions of place that are vivid, and a story that doesn't let you put the book down. There is no superficial journey here: it is a subtle, deep excursion into a mystery that leaves you feeling enriched by the experience.

Many characters just unsavory enough to be the murderer

As I lifelong resident of the Cedar Rapids, Iowa area, the most pleasing thing about this book is the references to the area. I can relate to where the main character goes, the changes in the city that he describes, and even the descriptions of the neighborhoods. Jack Walsh has retired from the Linn County Sheriff's department and is now performing private investigations. Many years ago, he led the investigation that placed George Pennyfeather in prison for murder. George has just been released and now his wife Lisa comes to him and tries to hire him to prove George's innocence. At first Jack refuses, but when a woman who had something to do with the case is found murdered in the Pennyfeather's back yard, he agrees to look into it. The story takes many twists and turns, Gorman introduces several people who are just unsavory enough to be a potential suspect. However as Walsh begins to learn more and more, the plot becomes even more convoluted. He discovers a child porn ring, but the person he suspects as the ringleader is not the real culprit. Then, other people involved in the case start being murdered, which limits his options. While there is a climactic ending, in typical Gorman style, it is not a happy one, although it does resolve all of the loose ends that have been woven throughout.
