The Night Caller

(from the back cover) It began on a Thursday. Right after Judy and her daughter returned from the shopping mall... First the phone calls. Obscene. Menacing. The the incidents. Violent. Terrifying. Every word and act revealed an intimate knowledge of her life, her thoughts. Now he was there. Just outside the door. Watching. Waiting. Knowing that nothing could protect her from....The Night Caller. This novel is part of that glut of paperbacks that came out in the 70's and early 80's in response to the popularity of books by Stephen King, James Herbert, Koontz, ans others. Brennan doesn't have the great technique of the above writers, but he still knows how to tell a good story. He doesn't rely on contrived red herrings, or set unaccountable traps to try and fool the readers. Rather, he lets the characters and the drama lead the reader down the dark hallway, and gives us a good fright. It's a real page turner.

The Night Caller

(from the back cover) It began on a Thursday. Right after Judy and her daughter returned from the shopping mall... First the phone calls. Obscene. Menacing. Then the incidents. Violent. Terrifying. Every word and act revealed an uncanny, intimate knowledge of her life, and her thoughts. Now he was there. Just outside the door. Watching. Waiting. Knowing that nothing could protect them from THE NIGHT CALLER.This novel belongs to the group of paperbacks that were pumped out in the late 70's to early 80's, in response the popularity of writers such as Stephen King, James Herbert, Koontz, and others. I am a big fan of these types of novels, and I found that THE NIGHT CALLER to be very good.Brennan Patrick has a nice subtle way of telling his story. He steers clear of any overzealous cleverness, and just lets the story unfold. He doesn't try and fool you with contrived red herrings, or set unassociated traps for the reader to keep them guessing. Rather, he takes us on a ride and lets the characters and the story build up our anticipation. The result - a real page turner.
