Book Overview

Fourth Edition - with Updated and Expanded Coverage

The New River is one of the most changeable and fickle rivers in the East-and also one of the most beautiful and rewarding. It attracts anglers, canoeists, kayakers, rafters, bird watchers, rock climbers and those who simply enjoy the great outdoors.

The New River Guide provides an indispensable overview of this untamed and scenic waterway as it winds through three states, including the bucolic South Fork in North Carolina, the ridges of Virginia and the gorges of West Virginia. Both casual and hardcore anglers will learn of the best places to fish for smallmouth bass. Canoeists will find the most enticing sections to paddle, whether they prefer placid stretches or white water. Rafters and kayakers headed for Class IV rapids in the New River Gorge will find the New River Guide a must-read.

Whether your destination is the rhododendron- and sycamore-covered hillsides of North Carolina, the 400-foot dolomite cliffs of Virginia, or the

"Grand Canyon of the East" in West Virginia, the New River Guide will make the beauty and excitement of this great river easily accessible.

This new edition includes updated and expanded information on favorite float trips, fishing spots, access points, bass lines and lures, and river guides and other resources.

More than a Fishing Guide

This guide to the Shenandoah and Rappahannock is aimed at fishing and boating enthusiasts but contains information of interest to others who want to become more familiar with these famous Virginia waterways. Ingram includes history and nature along with his descriptions of sections of the rivers and key access points. The title suggests more area geographically than the book actually discusses. It covers the South Fork of the Shenandoah but not the North Fork, the Shenandoah between Front Royal and Harpers Ferry (after the two forks combine), and the Rappahannock between Remington and Fredericksburg. The Rappahannock below Fredericksburg is ignored, perhaps because it is a very different river as it broadens and flows toward the Chesapeake Bay. Ingram writes in a chatty style with doses of humor. He bluntly states when a section of the river is inferior for boating or fishing. I think boaters in Virginia will find this book invaluable. Appendices include nice maps corresponding to the chapters.

Valuable resource

This is my second copy of the book. I loaned out my other one to a fellow fishing buddy and never got it back. Can't blame him though it is a great resource. I have been fishing the New River for around 15 years and I use this book before every trip. The maps are a bit crude, but effective. The written detail of each section is is very helpful. Thanks for taking the time to write Bruce, hope to fish with you someday!

New River Guide

This book is a must for anyone that is planing on floating the New River.
