An excellent reader with exercises for beginners

The story a Laotian villager who becomes a refugee. It is written in the simplest English for beginners with very useful exercises. Each chapter heavily reviews the previous then offers some new vocab and structure. Although the character is Laotian and the destination is the USA, beginners in New Zealand also empathise with the text and enjoy being able to read it with minimal English. Why on earth is this book out of print???
