The nervous system allows you to feel, think, move, breathe, have emotions, and remember things. The brain is the control center of the nervous system and sits on top of a long cord called the spinal cord. The spinal cord runs through the middle of the backbone, or spine, which protects the spinal cord. Nerves are cord-like structures that come out of the spinal cord and carry commands from your brain to all parts of your body and also send information back to the brain. The nervous system helps you feel objects and respond to things you touch and helps you see, hear, and taste. Your nervous system is always at work, making your body function and stay alive.
