Living a Life of Surrender. What does it mean to surrender to God? Chances are good that you have come across this idea of surrendering to God. Even the very act of believing in Jesus is itself, typically viewed as an act of surrender. Yet when we delve into this idea of surrender, we often start by focusing on the things we renounce. We catalogue the sins and habits we have to give to God. But this is not how surrender is meant to begin. The purpose of surrendering to God is to gain - that is where surrender starts. The process of surrendering is not about conforming our lives to fit our beliefs, but to receive the fullness of God's promises that come from believing. This is why Mark 10's famous exchange between Jesus and the rich young man begins with the man's question, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?" It is that promise of eternal life that prompts the man to seek Jesus and surrender. By starting with promise, surrender becomes more than another task or guilt-ridden burden, but the process by which we experience the fullness of God's presence. The rich young man walked away from Jesus because he misunderstood the kind of surrender Jesus was calling him to. This book aims to restore our understanding of surrender, from how surrender starts, to its end, to living a life of surrender. This is how we pass through the needle's eye into all the kingdom has to offer.
