Benson, known for his profound engagement with religious and spiritual themes, crafts a compelling narrative that treads the shadowy boundaries between the seen and unseen. "The Necromancers" is a chilling and thought-provoking journey into necromancy and the paranormal. Its enduring appeal lies in its masterful blend of literary prose and exploration of the occult. Terrors of the Mind

Like Henry James, M.R. James, and Roger Pater, R.H. Benson is a specialist in pure terror based on the imagination. Here he both satirizes the spiritualist excesses of the period (not unlike our own!); the self-satisfaction of a young man who imagines himself in love; and intently describes the dangers of opening one's life to pure evil. Deluded by his own ego, deceived by his imagination, the central character is profoundly endangered. Without a drop of blood or a single zombie, Benson unsettles the reader's basic ideas of reality!
