Book Overview

"You think you got away with something, don't you? But your time has run out. We know where you are. And we are coming." Andrew Ranulf Blankenship is a stylish nonconformist with wry wit, a classic Mustang, and a massive library. He's also a recovering alcoholic and a practicing warlock. His house is a maze of sorcerous booby traps and escape tunnels, as yours might be if you were sitting on a treasury of Russian magic stolen from the Soviet Union thirty years ago. Andrew has long known that magic is a brutal game requiring blood sacrifice and a willingness to confront death, but years of peace and comfort have left him more concerned with maintaining false youth than with seeing to his own defense. Now a monster straight from the pages of Russian folklore is coming for him, and frost and death are coming with her.

Best for those who like their books dark, morally questionable, and don't mind the occasional nonlin

To start with, this isn't (as it turns out) the kind of novel I like. It's far darker and more morally ambiguous than I usually go for. It does contain an interesting magic system, which is one of only two things that was keeping me reading. That other is the hope that they'd eventually get to an actual story. The blurb for the description takes most of the book to get to, which normally wouldn't bother me so much, but I found the main characters to be rather unlikeable. There aren't cutesy moments or any light laughs. Somehow the least f***ed up part of the story is the reanimated dog servant, which is almost sweet. These characters aren't just morally grey, they're fully corrupt in any number of ways. From the lesbian pedophile to the evil witch who eats children. They all dable in some f***ed up sh*t with little care for how it effects others.
