These party faithful consolidated their power and ideology through organization, maintained their strength by wooing the rural and Protestant population, and, after their 1928 electoral success, appealed to the general population's sense of volkisch nationalism. After the Nazi takeover in 1933, they became primarily the tool of Hitler.
