WHAT I like is that there is much information about the overall use of the navy in the civil war, showing the transition from wood and sail to iron and steam, it does that well for the period of the civil war, which is covered in 178 pages.
What I don't like is the book , not any technical information at all, more on civil war battle tactics very little about the ships themselves. And most of all what I dislike is the Title date period is very misleading. as there is only 4 and 1/3 pages on the period from 1865 to 1890. and that information is token at best. the US navy was very active in those years. in the 1870s and 80s with the first Korean peninsular war of 1871, 3 significant polar explorations and rescues, and the Apian Hurricane with the wateree of 1868, and the 1889 samoan hurricane incident to list a few. From 1884 on with the years spent designing, building and testing new technology with the ABCD fleet or Squadron of evolution, with the continual testing of new ideas and designs through the 1880s. Title should be The Navy From Wood to Steel 1860-1865, not 1860-1890.
