Hints, leads but ultimately a mystery without a solution (or maybe I am missing something). If on a winter's night...it is all about the journey. Shades of Mathews, Echenoz and the great unfinished novels of both Perec and Gadda; stories within stories soaring (almost) to the heights of Potocki.
Mystery of the Sardine

I'm SO glad this book has been rediscoved! It is in fact, one of my favorites. It makes you think, laugh and best of all it generates great conversation among people who have read it. There's no political corectness, no social agenda, no preaching, and no judgement. I've read and re-read it many times. The book lets you come to your own conclusions about what's happening to the characters. I first picked this up about 20 years ago and since that time have purchased several copies to give to friends. Until last year I had to purchase the book used because it was out of print. In reading the list of available in- print options for the Themersons I guess the country has finally caught up with this great charmer. A marvelous change from the 400 page goop out there which I wind up skimming over. I usually don't read about half of it because it rambles on with uninteresting details which are not at all enlightening; mearly filler in case someone wants to turn it into a film. READ IT! YOU'LL LOVE IT! YOU'LL RECOMMEND IT!
