The Mystery of the Beloved Disciple: New Evidence, Complete Answer

By Frederick W. Baltz

This Second Edition of The Mystery of the Beloved Disciple explores the identity of the writer of the anonymous Fourth Gospel. Was he John as church tradition says? Was there another important John among Jesus' disciples who was eyewitness to Jesus' words and deeds besides the son of Zebedee? Can we move beyond biblical characters' first names, leading to important discoveries? Does any of this matter in the end? The answer to all these questions is "yes". See how Lazarus, Mary, and Martha appear in sources outside the Bible, and how the Disciple Jesus Loved may be mentioned once in the Talmud. Why does this author use the title, the Disciple Jesus Loved, rather than his own name? And what of the early church tradition that John wore the petalon, the distinctive emblem of the High Priest of Israel alone? The New Testament's most enduring mystery now has a new and compelling answer. This Second Edition makes The Mystery of the Beloved Disciple available once again for readers who continue to ask for it.
