For many years "The Glades," as some called it, had been home to some very old, towering Cypress trees that kept the ecology there balanced. If you happened to travel along the Tamiami Trail into the wilderness of Big Cypress National Preserve, you would likely find gators sunbathing on the banks of the canals, as those reptiles, meaning Alligators and Crocodiles, reigned supreme in those swampy waters. People needed to be particularly careful along the 25-mile Loop Road that trails off the main highway leading you deep into the Everglades.
