When I was in first grade in 1985, I won a copy of this book for some reason. I didn't think much of it at first, but once I began reading it, I was transfixed and awed by all the stories and facts of marine life and human explorers discovering each other. What particularly caught my attention was a section on scuba diving, late 1970s style. Ever since the day I read that part, I wanted to learn to scuba dive, and eventually fulfilled that goal about fifteen years later during my college years. I'm still fascinated by the ocean and regularly go diving now, and I'd have to say I owe a lot of that interest to this book. But I'd recommend this book to any kid interested in nature and marine biology, despite its age. It's impossible to predict what sorts of thoughts it may put into their heads.
