The Moving Picture Girls Under the Palms: Adventures and Perils of the Moving Picture Girls in Florida

By Laura Lee Hope

Book Overview

"The Moving Picture Girls Under the Palms" by Laura Lee Hope follows the adventures of Ruth and Alice DeVere, two sisters who are part of a moving picture company. The story begins with the company preparing to leave New York for Florida to film new scenes. The journey is marked by an unexpected incident when Claude Towne, a new member of the company, falls overboard but is quickly rescued. This event is captured on film by Russ Dalwood, the company's cameraman, adding an element of excitement to their trip. As the steamer continues its journey, a fire breaks out on board, causing panic among the passengers. Captain Falcon, the ship's commander, reassures everyone that the situation is under control, but the fire persists, and the ship becomes disabled. The passengers face the possibility of abandoning ship, and some, like Mr. Sneed and Mr. Bunn, choose to leave in a lifeboat. The wireless operator manages to contact another ship, the _Bell_, which is on its way to assist. Throughout these challenges, the camaraderie and resilience of the moving picture company are highlighted, as they navigate the dangers of the sea and the uncertainties of their profession. The narrative combines elements of adventure, suspense, and the evolving world of early 20th-century filmmaking, offering readers a glimpse into the lives of those who brought stories to life on the silver screen.
