My father, Terence Gallacher, joined British Movietone News on 1st October 1945 as a seventeen-year-old General Office clerk for Two Pounds, five shillings a week. Movietone's address was 22 Soho Square, London. "I thought that the excitement of the job would fade in time. It never did. Every day, there was something new and sometimes wonderful. History was unfolding day by day". Movietone was one of the main Newsreels of the day. Before the advent of television, newsreels were shown in cinemas and for many were the only source of news. Terry's book, "The Movietone Years", celebrates the invention and ingenuity of his colleagues and shares first-hand experience of the people and the process to get a story to the screen.
