The novel is set in the isolated town of Perry, North Carolina, which is located in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains. The three main characters' lives are forever entwined after their involvement in a tragic incident. The young, beautiful nurse, Amber, along with the strong, confident forest ranger, Brad, help to save the life of a neglected, disturbed, teenage boy, Donny. Donny and Brad both form an immediate attraction to Amber on first sight. While Brad's intentions are noble, Donny's are malevolent. Amber has no idea that she has become the ultimate obsession of a serial killer in the making. While Brad and Amber ride the roller coaster towards a life-long commitment, Donny is perfecting his lethal behavior to conquer and possess Amber.
