By using modern language and references when possible, Mr Matthews has shown the timelessness of Martial's epigrams. Where Martial addresses a man who buried seven wives, Matthews offers: "Sow the body, reap the estate: isn't agriculture grand?" This could be the lead story in tomorrow's paper. If you haven't read the 100 epigrams since school days, here's your chance to pick up a handsome, and rather hip, copy.
